The Kuk attaches great importance to child-centered education to accommodate the individual differences among its students. Children can learn at their own pace by selecting the learning activities according to their abilities and interests, which are conducted under teachers' guidance and self-directed learning alternatively or simultaneously. The teaching design is based on the entire school as a whole and is no longer limited to a single classroom; the learning-rich environment encourages children to explore and learn independently, so as to achieve comprehensive and balanced development.

The Kuk child care service adopts an integrated teaching method along with the thematic approach in pre-school education, with content covers six major Learning Areas, including language, early childhood mathematics, nature and living, arts and creativity, self and society, and physical fitness and health. Versatile extra-curricular activities are arranged for students to enrich real-life learning experience and widen their horizons.

With toys and games elements, children can practice different learning aspects such as language, mathematical concepts, science and technology, and logical thinking through the use of the teaching aids. From "learning by doing" and "learning through play", to consolidate their studies.

To continue to promote teaching in an open environment and add diversified teaching aids and low-structured materials in the classroom to enhance the learning motivation of children with different abilities.

 

  • For Teachers:

     1. The principal will lead senior teacher and teachers to inspect and review the effectiveness of implementing open teaching in the previous year in curriculum review meetings

      2. Improve teachers’ teaching effectiveness through joint lesson preparation, observation, and evaluation under the School-based Support Programmes of the Education Bureau.

      3. Add diversified and low-structured materials and equipment to the teaching environment to enhance the learning motivation of children with different abilities.

     1. The principal, senior teachers, and teachers to jointly formulate the goals and content of the plan through meetings and discussions.

Activity: Chinese Culture & National Day Celebration

Class:K1 to K3

 

Objectives:

  • Establish children’s understanding towards Chinese culture and the National Day, and experience the joyful atmosphere of the National Day celebration.
  • Cultivate children with national pride and a sense of national identity.

Activity Highlights:

  • Develop an appreciation for flag-raising ceremony and military parade by providing flag-raising experience in school. All students and teachers take part in the flag-raising ceremony and sing the National Anthem together to feel the solemnity and be respectful to the flag-raising ceremony.

  • Explain the meaning and activities of National Day via feature film, and introduce the origin of the National Day to children for acquiring an initial understanding. Through Chinese cultural appreciation (e.g. Chinese dance performance, authentic Chinese food, shadow play, Cantonese opera and flag-raising ceremony) to cultivate children with national pride and a sense of national identity.

Activity: Cultural Adventures Week- Exploring Chinese Traditions

Class:K1 to K3

 

Objectives:

  • Organization of a Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations and Chinese cultural immersion activities, enabling children to experience the festive atmosphere in traditional Chinese costumes and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture. Through this, they can appreciate the rich traditional values of Chinese culture.
  • Foster children's sense of national identity and citizenship.

Activity Highlights:

Celebrating Chinese National Day

  • Use video clips to introduce National Day and enhance children's understanding of China, traditional culture, customs, music, and art activities. The children will participate in the flag-raising ceremony, strengthening their sense of national identity, fostering patriotism, and experiencing the solemnity and respect associated with the ceremony.

Mid-Autumn Festival Lantern Exhibition

  • Children will have the opportunity to learn about traditional Chinese festivals and customs, listen to folk stories related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and organize a lantern exhibition and mooncake tasting session together to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Experiencing Chinese Cultural Activities

  • Engage children in a variety of Chinese cultural activities, such as Cantonese puppetry performances, shadow play featuring Chinese folk story "The Jade Rabbit and Chang'e", Chinese orchestra performances, and traditional Cantonese opera appreciation. Through hands-on experiences, children can personally appreciate Chinese art and culture, helping them develop a sense of national identity and citizenship from an early age.

Creating Traditional Chinese Handicrafts

  • Engagechildren in visual arts activities to create traditional Chinese handicrafts, allowing them to explore the country's traditional artistic techniques. K1 students will make painted wooden rattle drums, K2 students will make spinning tops, and K3 students will make Peking Opera mask fans. Through these activities, children can explore their creativity while learning about Chinese folk toys.

Enjoying Chinese Snacks

  • During teatime, incorporatea variety of Chinese specialty snacks, including mantou (Chinese steamed buns), siu-mai, rice rolls, congee, ma-lai-gou(Cantonese steamed sponge cake) , and vegetable and pork dumplings. By enjoying these diverse Chinese cuisines. Children can also learn about traditional Chinese dining etiquette.

  • "Inter-school Chinese Culture Carnival." The festivities feature nostalgic traditional snack stalls, "Little Chinese Craftsmen" stall - where children create flour dolls and engage in various traditional folk games. Moreover, the event features themed decorations showcasing Chinese cultural elements, inviting all attendees to capture memories through photographs. These activities aim to cultivate an appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage and encourage its continuation among young children, while also fostering a sense of national pride.

Activity Highlights:

The day was filled with diverse stall activities. Parents and children bonded while crafting flour dolls, an activity that captivated everyone!

 

 

Young children participated in Mushe (Chinese bowling), Chinese chess games, and learned about their native culture.

 

 

At the "What’s in the Candy Box" stall, young children discovered a variety of traditional New Year foods!

 

 

Young children also relished playing ancient Chinese sports like Cuju (a form of football in ancient China) and traditional games like hoop throwing.

 

 

Engaging in activities such as Touhu (pitch-pot), sandbag toss game, and trying their hand at archery, everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest!

 

 

Additionally, visitors savored nostalgic snacks like sugar onion pancakes, with some children even delighting in feeding their mothers, creating heartwarming moments!

 

 

To wrap up the festivities, parents and children took the opportunity to take pictures in front of the culturally rich backdrops, preserving cherished memories.

Objectives:

  • Our goal is to deepen young children's understanding of China's rich cultural traditions through diverse activities. These include Shadow Puppet Performances, Chinese Music Appreciation, Traditional Magic Shows, Crafting Traditional Chinese Arts, and Chinese Traditional Foods. These experiences will engage children with and help them appreciate the unique aspects of Chinese culture, fostering a sense of patriotism and heritage while enhancing their curiosity.

The "Sky Bird Puppet Group" presents a captivating shadow puppet show, offering the young children a deep appreciation for Chinese arts and culture.

Name of Activity: Legislative Council Complex Visit

Grade: K3

 

Objective of Activity:

  • To enhance children’s understanding of the Hong Kong legislature and cultivate good civic awareness among them.

Introduction of Activity:

  • K3 children visit the Legislative Council (LegCo) Complex, where they not only visit the Chamber, Viewing Gallery, and Hall of History, but also learn about the birth and functions of laws through listening to stories. They can also try to simulate being a young councillor and vote to pass laws, in order to understand the work of councillors and the importance of abiding by the law, and enhance their understanding of the Hong Kong legislature.

Name of Activity: Hong Kong Heritage Museum Visit

Grade: K3

 

Objective of Activity:

  • To increase children’s knowledge of the history of Po Leung Kuk and understanding of the services provided by Po Leung Kuk in society.

Introduction of Activity:

  •  In order to enhance students’ understanding of culture and the history of Po Leung Kuk, K3 students were specially arranged to visit the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Po Leung Kuk Museum jointly planned the “Building Charity with Benevolence” exhibition. This exhibition begins with the Kuk’s residential services – the oldest services offered, documenting the children’s journey from entering and staying in the Kuk to leaving it. This is a journey of mutual help and perseverance in adversity. Students could learn about the services provided by Po Leung Kuk in society through the interactive exhibits in the exhibition hall.

Name of Activity: 23-24 Parent-Child Outing Fun

Grade: All kindergarten students and their parents/guardians

 

Objective of Activity:

  • The aim of this event is to enhance the bond between parents and the school. Collaborating with the Parent-Teacher Association, the school organises a fun parent-child outing, providing parents with an opportunity to strengthen their relationships with their children and enjoy jolly time together.

During the parent-child outing, a variety of engaging activities were arranged, and both parents and children actively participated, creating memorable moments.

 

 

Parents and children together enjoyed the playground facilities, fostering a cheerful atmosphere where the children fully engaged in play.

 

 

Despite the chilly weather, parents had the chance to row boats with their children, creating unforgettable memories together.

 

 

Throughout the free activity session, parents and children engaged in various facilities, including rock climbing walls, inflatable slides, electric bumper cars, and video game consoles, enjoying great parent-child time together.

 

 

Professional fitness instructors were invited to design enjoyable physical activities for parents and children, organising inclusive competitive games such as inflatable sausage sports matches. Parents enthusiastically participated in the activities.

Name of Activity: Hong Kong Wetland Park Visit

Grade:  K1

 

Objective of Activity:

  • To deepen young children’s understanding of various natural species and cultivate their interest in nature.   

Introduction of Activity:

  •  K1 students visited the Hong Kong Wetland Park, where teachers guided them through various facilities including Pui Pui’s Home, the Stream Walk, and the Wetland Discovery Centre. Through direct observation and by engaging their five senses, the students explored diverse flora and fauna, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of wetland ecosystems and cultivating a love for nature.

Grade:  K2

 

Objective of Activity:

  • To enhance young children’s awareness of dental care and cultivate good oral hygiene habits

Introduction of Activity:

  • During the visit, young children were engaged with children’s songs and explanations provided by dental staff to learn the correct techniques for brushing their teeth and to select appropriate children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste. Furthermore, through interactive role-playing games, taking turns as dentists with various dental tools, young children enjoyed exploring dental care practices and learned the significance of reducing snack consumption to establish a routine of healthy eating habits.

Objective of Activity:

  • To help young children understand information about water resources and the importance of water conservation in daily life through a visit to the Water Resources Education Center.    

Introduction of Activity:

  • Children will visit the Water Resources Education Center, where a guide will lead them through various exhibits, providing observations and explanations. Through live demonstrations and interactive games, children will engage their five senses to learn about water resources, enhancing their understanding of the importance of water in daily life and learning to conserve it.

Name of Activity:Green Farm Fund - Farming Fun Activity

Grade: K2 & K3

 

Objective of Activity:

  • Through the Farming Fun Activity, young children will learn to appreciate and care for natural resources by listening to stories about seed growth, visiting the farmer’s working environment, observing the growth of various crops, and engaging in simple farming tasks with their parents.   

Introduction of Activity:

  • Teachers will lead children to the Green Farm Fund, where a guide will show them around the farm. Children will learn about the conditions needed for crops to grow, experience being a small farmer, and plant seeds, thereby enhancing their understanding of farming work.

Name of Activity: Visit to the Legislative Council Complex

Grade: K3

 

Objective of Activity:

  • To enhance young children's understanding of Hong Kong's legislature and cultivate good civic awareness.  

Introduction of Activity:

  • The children in K3 visited the Legislative Council Complex. They toured the Chamber, Viewing Gallery, and Hall of History. Through story-telling sessions, they learned about the creation and function of laws. The children simulated being members of the Legislative Council and voted on laws, gaining insight into the work of the members and the importance of following the law.

Name of Activity: Sha Tin Road Safety Town

Grade: K2

 

Objective of Activity:

  • By visiting the Sha Tin Road Safety Town, children can enrich their life experience, learn correct road safety knowledge, become responsible road users, apply what they have learned in daily life, and inspire their families and peers to become good citizens who abide by social rules.   

Introduction of Activity:

  • Teachers bring K2 children to Sha Tin Road Safety Town, where traffic policemen introduce common road facilities and different traffic signs to the children. They also arrange for the children to play pedestrians and drivers, for the children to learn to be responsible drivers and good citizens who abide by road rules on simulated roads, thereby strengthening their civic awareness.

The activity also seeks to nurture young children's interest in Chinese culture, art, and history.  

Introduction of Activity:

  • Teachers lead children through various exhibition halls of the Hong Kong Palace Museum. The children are introduced to artefacts and innovative crafts from the Qing dynasty's Forbidden City, exquisite 18th-century relics, and ceramic treasures from the Palace Museum's collection. By engaging with these antiquities, the children develop a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of Chinese culture, art, and history.

Objective of Activity:

  • By visiting the Sai Kung Tsiu Hang Lions Nature Education Centre, young children can deepen their understanding of various natural species, fostering their interest in exploring nature and its diverse flora and fauna. This activity also aims to strengthen parent-child relationships by engaging parents in the outdoor learning experience and providing them with insights into their children’s educational development.

Introduction of Activity:

  • Teachers guide K1 children and their parents to the Sai Kung Tsiu Hang Lions Nature Education Centre, where they explore exhibition halls and outdoor planting areas, including the Agricultural Hall, Fisheries Hall, Field Crops Area, Ornamental Plants Area, Interesting Plants Area, Dragonfly Pond, Bamboo Grove, Insectarium, and Net House. Children are encouraged to use worksheets to record their favorite or most memorable experiences during the visit and to collect natural items (e.g., dried leaves and twigs) for creative projects to share at school. After the guided tour, time is allocated for parents and children to independently explore other exhibition areas, such as the Chinese Herbal Garden, aligning with children’s learning interests and sparking their curiosity about nature.

After the group photo, teachers guide the children and parents to visit the Fisheries Hall and Agricultural Hall. Let’s begin!

 

 

In the Fisheries Hall, children learn about various fish-related topics, such as methods of fishing and aquaculture, as well as fish species commonly found in Hong Kong.

 

 

Through teacher-led introductions and parent-child exploration, children actively engage with interactive games designed to enhance learning.

 

 

At the Agricultural Hall, children discover how vegetables are cultivated, including the process of planting seeds in soil, germination, growth, and hydroponic farming methods.

 

 

The hall also features digital games that parents and children can enjoy together while learning interactively.

Parents and children venture outdoors to observe plants in areas like the Field Crops Area and Interesting Plants Area, exploring different types of fruits, gourds, and interesting plant varieties.

 

 

Next, they visit the Insectarium to learn about the life cycles of butterflies, bees, crickets, and other insects, gaining insights into insect ecology.

 

 

The hall also provides interactive games for children. The Insectarium is always a favourite among children.

During free exploration time, parents and children continue to explore the surroundings, making a variety of delightful discoveries. Highlights include vibrant hibiscus flowers along the roadside, red and yellow fallen leaves scattered on the ground, a scarecrow guarding the plants, and the picturesque Dragonfly Pond adorned with lotus flowers.

Name of Activity:Parent-Child Christmas Celebration

Grade: N to K1

 

Objective of Activity:

  • Through Parent-Child Christmas Celebration, young children experience the festive joy together with their parents.

Introduction of Activity:

  • : To celebrate the festive season, our kindergarten hosts a ‘Parent-Child Christmas Celebration’. Children are invited to wear traditional costumes from around the world and participate in the Christmas celebration. Activities include Christmas booth games, parent-child Christmas crafts, parent-child Christmas food preparation, a Christmas wish wall, games with Santa Claus, as well as singing English songs and dancing.
