Gale Well Group donated $10 million to support the Po Leung Kuk Headquarters East Wing Redevelopment Project

(18 March 2019, Hong Kong) The Po Leung Kuk Headquarters East Wing Redevelopment Project in Causeway Bay will get underway to increase service quotas and expand new services for benefiting the society. Po Leung Kuk is privileged to receive a generous donation of HK$10 million from Gale Well Group in memory of the late Mr Thomas LIU Lit-ching, the Founder of Gale Well Group cum the Vice Chairman of Po Leung Kuk(1974-75), to support the Kuk’s redevelopment project. The charitable act is expected to motivate more generous contributions from all sectors of the community for the sake of this mega project.

In appreciation of Gale Well Group for their devotion to the cause of charity, the “Cheque Presentation Ceremony for the Donation by Dr Rita TONG LIU and Gale Well Group” was held today, where Dr Margaret W L CHOI, Chairman of Po Leung Kuk, stated in her speech that over the 140-year of services of Po Leung Kuk, the Headquarters in Causeway Bay houses our traditional services, and is home of over 300 children needing residential care. The redevelopment will improve the living environment for our children, offer accommodations to more underprivileged children, and expand more space for new services in response to the social needs; whereas the Grade II historical Main Building will free up more rooms as communal space and incorporate creative, cultural and conversation elements with the aim of sharing this valuable, local heritage with the public.

Chairman Dr CHOI also pointed out the projected cost of the Headquarters redevelopment project was over HK$1 billion, she wished to solicit resources and supports from various donors for the success of this cornerstone project.

The ceremony was attended by Gale Well Group representatives comprising Dr Rita TONG LIU, SBS, BBS, President; Dr Jacinto TONG, Chief Executive Officer; Dato Luis TONG; Miss Jennifer W F LIU, Vice-Chairman cum Director of Po Leung Kuk; and Mr Jeffrey LIU, Vice-Chairman, together with Dr Margaret W L CHOI, Chairman of Po Leung Kuk; Mr Ching Nam MA, CStJ, JP, Mr Calvin L LAM, Dr Daniel C Y CHAN and wife, and Mrs Winnie W L CHAN, Vice-Chairmen of Po Leung Kuk; Members of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board; and former Presidents including Dr Sally WONG LEUNG, FMBA, C.Mgr, D.Mgr, GBS, OBE, JP, President of Po Leung Kuk (1971-72).

The total floor area after redevelopment will span 200,000 sq. ft., with an increase of 88,000 sq. ft. from present, which can raise the quotas of the subvented children residential care service, crèche service and kindergarten-cum-nursery service that are currently operated by the Kuk’s Headquarters from 451 to 605, as well as providing room for introduction of new non-subvented services and communal space.
