PLK Academy of Professional Education officially opens to provide professional training diploma programmes

（Hong Kong, 25th March, 2020）As one of the largest School-Sponsoring Bodies (SSBs) in Hong Kong, Po Leung Kuk strives to work towards the development of education services with a mindset of nurturing talents for the society. The recent opening ofPLK Academy of Professional Education, the first institution established by the Kuk that has a key focus on in-service professional training, marks a milestone in our efforts to provide quality education for the public. A variety of programmes which place emphasis on both theoretical and practical aspects will be offered, targeting educators and the broader communities alike. Officiated by The Hon Kevin Yun Hung YEUNG, JP,Secretary for Education, an opening ceremony was held recently.

 

The first batch of programmes to be launched by the Academy include Professional Diploma in Special Child Care Work, Professional Certificate in Playgroup Teacher Training and Professional Certificate in Learning & Teaching for Non-Chinese Speaking Children, aiming to provide professional training to nursery and kindergarten teachers as well as anyone wishing to work in the field of early childhood education. All three programmes are at QF (Qualifications Framework) level 4 accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and are scheduled to commence in mid-2020.

 

The tuition fees of the one-year professional diploma programme and the 6-month professional certificate courses are set to be $19,600 and $9,300 respectively. PLK staff and teachers working at affiliated schools who intend to take the courses may apply for funding under the PLK Professional Development Fund whereas the others may apply for the Continuous Education Fund (CEF). Short-term school-based teacher training courses will also be organised by the Academy with the aim of addressing the practical needs and enhancing the professional knowledge of teachers. At the opening ceremony, Mr Ching Nam MA, CStJ, JP, Chairman of Po Leung Kuk, commented that major efforts had been made by the Kuk in nurturing talents to serve the interests of society as one the largest SSBs in Hong Kong. As the Education Bureau have stepped up measures in recent years to enhance the quality of kindergarten education, it is foreseeable that the demands for kindergarten teachers and the necessary professional qualifications will rise. With the launch of three professional programmes, the Academy is expected to contribute to the advancement of over 51 registered kindergartens and kindergarten-cum-nurseries currently operating under the Kuk and raise the bar for all other practitionersof early childhood education.

 

The Hon Kevin Yun Hung YEUNG, JP, Secretary for Education, commended the establishment of PLK Academy of Professional Education as it would fulfil complementary needs to promote the development of kindergarten education. It was delightful for him to see a team of professionals from the education sector working unceasingly with enthusiasm, participation and commitment to enrich the school lives of children. Mr YEUNG also hoped that the Academy would broaden the horizons of its ambitious students, equip them with the range of skills and knowledge needed for teaching and empower them to develop a successful career in education for the benefits of future generations.
