"The Flying Dreams" Child Development Fund Project

A life without goals is like a road trip without a map.

Introduction

Since 2012, Po Leung Kuk Tin Ka Ping Youth and Family Development Centre has been operating the Child Development Fund Project for 12 years, benefiting over 900 participants and their families. With support from the Child Development Fund, the Centre will implement the “The Flying Dreams” Child Development Fund Project V for children and youth from November 2024 to October 2027. Additionally, a donation of $552,000 from The Wang Family Charity Fund as the matching fund to help our children to save for realizing their Personal Development Plans, and alleviate intergenerational poverty. The program has successfully recruited 115 participants and 58 mentors, who come from various professional groups, including alumni who participated in previous programs.

Three Elements of the Programme

  • Mentorship: Mentor, as a Life Guide, is expected to widen the participant's horizons, offer career inspirations, and assist in building up self-esteem and resilience, providing guidance and companionship as part of the personal development experience. Mentors will engage with participants at least once a month throughout the three-year programme.
  • Personal development plans: The Personal Development Plan seeks to enable our children to identify their own long-term vision and motivate them to take steps for pursuing targets that are achievable in the short run. The plan should include both short-term and long-term development goals, with specific action steps that set them on the path to achieve them. The development goals should support capacity enhancement, developing knowledge or skills around a particular hobby/interest, or to lay the foundation for further education or future career. In the third year of the project, participants can make use of the targeted savings to implement their PDPs.
  • Targeted Savings: Targeted Savings encourages participants to set a monthly savings target of HK$200 over a two-year period.  The Wang Family Charity Fund together with the Government, contribute to a 1:1:1 matching fund for the savings. Each child can achieve up to a maximum sum of HK$14,400 to implement their Personal Development Plans upon completion of the Targeted Savings Programme.132
