Exhibition Introduction

Po Leung Kuk has provided residential child care services since 1878, offering appropriate care and education to the Kuk's children. As Hong Kong's population surged in the 1950s, the Kuk’s intake gradually exceeded its capacity. In response, the "Child Sponsorship Scheme" was launched in 1961 to invite donors to offer support. The scheme received an overwhelming response, significantly improving the living and educational conditions of the children. Beyond financial aid, sponsors built deep emotional bonds with the children by staying connected through letters, visits, and "Child Sponsors' Days" to offer personal care and encouragement. Over the past 65 years, the Child Sponsorship Scheme has witnessed a meaningful evolution in philanthropy—transforming from simple charitable donations into enduring, heartfelt companionship that nurtures a child’s growth.

Through historical archives, letters, and photographs, this exhibition traces the 65-year journey of Po Leung Kuk’s child sponsorship services—from its origins and community support to the touching personal connections between sponsors and children—highlighting decades of continuous kindness and protection.
