In propelling the development of Cantonese operatic art, Po Leung Kuk has been making ceaseless effort in nurturing students and younger generations with ample opportunities in learning the precious art form as part of the non-tangible cultural heritage. The International Centre of Sakyamunis Culture Limited proudly presents Backstage charity drama, taking you from stage front to back with fascinating drama, Cantonese opera experts and interactive section.Proceeds of the programme will be used to optimize elderly services and support Cantonese Opera Fund of Po Leung Kuk.

Synopsis of Backstage
The story takes place at the backstage of a Cantonese opera troupe. The performance is about to start, and artists are getting ready. A young reporter who does not speak Cantonese is visiting the troupe. She sees the Monkey King rehearsing a combat scene with the leading actor who dressed in dazzling military costumes. The leading actress shows her stylized move in her three-inch tiny shoes. The beard man flaunts his technique with his long beard…the reporter is curious and puzzled by all these while the producer explains bit by bit to her. Meanwhile, an aged artist steps in and is mistaken as the substitute musician. He is being put to rehearse with other musicians. As the show starts, everybody leaves the backstage. The aged artist remains and reminisces his past as he sings a “Nanyin”. When all artists come back, they realise theaged artist is a retired renowned Cantonese opera star…

 

Interactive Section

Audiences will have the opportunity to learn opera movements and even do a traditional opera makeup.

 

Synopsis of Scramble for an Umbrella
Wong Rui-Lan, daughter of the Minister of War, is separated from her mother during the war and meets the cultivated talent Jiang Shi-Long one day in the wilderness. They fall in love during the journey and Rui-Lan gives Shi-Long her hairpin as a token of marriage.
