Grand opening of the largest Day Care Centre for the Elderly in Hong Kong Featuring five senses training to slow down aging

(27 March 2019, Hong Kong)  The Po Leung Kuk Tsuen Wan Day Care Centre for the Elderly, the largest single-block building for elderly day care services in Hong Kong, marked its grand opening today. The Centre provides daytime care, nursing and training services for the frail elders in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing Districts based upon the concept of “five senses and double P (Pleasure of Playing)”.

Po Leung Kuk is committed to supporting “aging in place” with the emphasis on the elders’ physical, mental and spiritual well-being, enabling the elderly to enjoy their twilight years in their own community. The services of the Tsuen Wan Day Care Centre for the Elderly include counselling and referral services, carer support, health education, nursing services, physiotherapy, social and therapeutic activities, occupational therapy training and catering service. Based on the concept of “five senses and double P (Pleasure of Playing)”, the Centre incorporates the five sensory elements (referring to sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste) into the interior design and its training programs, and promote the “pleasure of playing” by providing joyful experience to the elderly during trainings and exercises.

The three-storey Centre offers 88 regular service quotas. All service points in the building are connected with the “Happy Railway” labels. Each floor has unique facilities and decorations, such as the interactive techno-game zone, gourmet corner, herbal garden, scenic feature wall and aquarium etc. The “five senses” elements are fully utilized in the building, allowing the elderly to receive adequate multi-sensory stimulation in their daily activities in order to help defer the cognitive and sensory degeneration. A wide variety of rehabilitation facilities are set up for rehabilitation and self-care training purposes; whereas programs are arranged according to the daily routine of the elderly like housework, shopping, socialising, and combined with cognitive trainings and exercises so as to facilitate happy aging at home space.

The Centre also organises various interest groups. For instance, the Aroma Team provides massage and aromatherapy to the elderly for olfactory stimulation and relieving their chronic pain and emotional stress; while the Music Team targets to enhance the elders’ oral and listening abilities, as well as develop their hobbies and self-confidence by encouraging them to practise classic songs and different musical instruments. The elders can also communicate with each other and share the happy moments during practice.

In her speech, Dr Margaret W L CHOI, Chairman of Po Leung Kuk, expressed her sincere gratitude to the Social Welfare Department for its staunch support, and she was glad to share that the Tsuen Wan Day Care Centre for the Elderly, the twelfth Elderly Centre of the Kuk, is the largest single-block building for elderly day care services in Hong Kong. Aiming to support the elderly in home-based aging, the Centre becomes a gathering point with nursing, rehabilitation and social functions for the elderly in the districts, and provide them with multi-sensory stimulations to defer aging.

Officiating guest Mr TAN Tick Yee, Assistant Director (Elderly) of Social Welfare Department, said that since the establishment of the Tsuen Wan Day Care Centre for the elderly, Po Leung Kuk has invested substantially and increase service quotas for benefiting more elderly in the districts. At the same time, as a long term partner of the Social Welfare Department, the Kuk will become the operator of the “Pilot Scheme on Multi-disciplinary Outreaching Support Teams for the Elderly” in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing areas from May this year.
